In 1683 the male line of the Aubreys of Ynyscedwyn came to an end with the death of the last Morgan Aubrey. The estate then passed into the family of the Portreys, where Richard Portrey of Cheriton, Vicar of Rhossili and Ystradgynlais, had married Catherine Aubrey. His son, Christopher Portrey inherited the estate; after his death, the inheritance passing to his elder son Richard, and then to his second son Christopher. William Gough of Willsbury, Saint Briavels, Gloucestershire was born in 1693 and in 1717 he married Catherine Portrey, daughter of Christopher Portrey of Ynyscedwyn, Ystradgynlais, Breconshire. In December 1752 the last of the male Portreys, Christopher junior, died. William and Catherine's son, Richard, inherited Ynyscedwyn, taking the name Richard Gough Aubrey as part of the family compact. For the next 190 years, the Gough family would be squires of Ynyscedwyn, across four generations. This is the story of the family from their Gloucestershire origins, up to the death of the Reverend Fleming Gough in 1835. This 2nd Edition of the Compendium takes the original articles as published in Infinity Wanderers 1,2,3,5,6, & 7, and positions them here in chronological order, as well as adding new or additional research to them, as applicable. The order of articles thus follows the order of inheritance - from the Portreys, through William Gough senior's marriage, to Richard Gough Aubrey to his brother, the Reverend James Gough Aubrey, then a look at the third brother, William Gough, Captain Royal Navy, and then the inheritance passing through him (deceased 1760) to his elder son Richard Gough Aubrey (second of that name) and then to his second surviving son, Reverend Fleming Gough.
